we recently launched a nagiosxi server (version 5.5.8), and trying to add a icon for each host to separate hosts based on their OS, such as linux and windows. I changed the path for icon image to the path we store all graphs and seems it is not working .

Sorry for the late response, but where you able to get this resolved? Are you still using XI? As a XI user you should have access to the customer forums which provide a 24 hour response time. The customer forums are available to customers and people with trial additions of XI.
That said, I did a quick test and it doesn't look like it likes sub directories. Save the image directly to the logos directory instead of logos/base and it should work.
