Nagios xi Virtual Machine Issue

Post by michael.redmond »

Hello,

I'm not sure what type of support to expect as a "trial user" of Nagios xi. Is there support available during the trial period?

Here is my concern:

I am using the VM Appliance that I downloaded and then imported into VMWare ESX via vCenter. I notice that the CPU load is high (CPU load flapping up into the 6's and 7's), and I only have a handful of monitors in place, as I'm still getting a feel for the system. I don't know if it is something with the VM itself, or if the VM needs more hardware behind it. Also, is there a VM template based on a "beefier" OS profile, like 64 bit with a muti-core kernel?

Thanks,

Michael

Hello Michael,
within the ESX you can increase both the memory and change to multi-cpu. We have also had additional requests for 64 bit so this may be something we will provide on request (or even end up sharing on the library).

We do offer help in the "General > Nagios xi" forums the only difference really being response time when possible.

What is the proper way to shut down nagios and halt the CPU? At the OS console, I ran "init 0". Does that shut down Nagios properly?

Also, when I added a 2nd CPU to the VM, it seemed to slow down the VM. Is there anything else I need to do after changing the VM to 2 CPU so that CentOS will recognize it properly?

Thanks,

Michael

How many hosts + services are you checking so far?
What kinds of checks are you running? switches? bandwidth?

I would suggest reading on VMWare's documentation for optimal configurations with ESX (adding CPU's, Memory, etc), their documentation will be better than anything we have.

If you are running the latest 2011R1.1 VM I suggest that you install VMware Tools. This appears to be missing (used to be in the 2009 vm). This should make a difference to the performance you are seeing.

Increase the memory to 2GB is recommend.

Multi CPU is only really needed when you have a LOT of checks OR you are running checks that are resource intensive (like ones that use the VMware SDK).

Avoid configuring all of your checks with the same time intervals. If everything is checking every 5 minutes the Nagios xi server will be crazy at that 5 minute mark and quiet for most of the other time. Make less important checks like disk free space every hour, or every 58 minutes to make it more random through the day.
