Syslog with Nagios xi Cisco switches

Post by Kalle1970 »

Hello Community,

iam using nagios xi in a trial version and want to test some funktions bevor using Nagios xi productiv.

I added 2 Cisco switches with the wizard and the Ports are showing well in nagios xi.

The next step is using Nagios xi as syslog server for the 2 Cisco switches,
Is that possible with nagios xi ?
When yes, how can I implement that ? I thing the switch configuration is no problem, but I don’t know how to handle in Nagios xi.

Do you have some tips for me ?

thanks and regards

Setting up xi as the syslog server isn't built in, but there are several items on the exchange that go over monitoring syslog server with xi

Guten Abend Kalle1970,

Which plugin did you install, nagios is not by default a syslog server. That is generally conducted on a separate server however the link that Scott sent has a handful of plugins which will allow you to do such things.

Hallo Kalle1970,

Do you have your Switches set up to log to a syslog? If you do, is this syslog logging to a MySQL database? This plugin will read that log from the database and report it back to Nagios xi:

http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Pl ... 29/details

As Scott said, since we do not have documentation on how to set the Nagios xi server to retrieve syslogs from external sources the easiest way to go about your implementation would be to remotely log them and then use a check running from Nagios xi to read them. The link Scott shared above has many plugins which will do this in different ways to meet your needs.

Nein, ich bin nicht deutsch, aber ich spreche ein wenig. :)

Hello Slansing,

i set my switches to log the logs to the Nagios xi, I dindt know that the core Installation of Nagios xi is not supporing the Syslog feature.

Soo i would say that the nagios xi is not the correct product.
I need a external syslogserver where the switches send the log, then i need the plugin in nagios xi that ist report it back to nagios xi.

thanks for you replay

Centralized logging is not within the scope of xi at the moment. Monitoring a centralized logging server is though. That is not to stop someone from setting up xi to do it though. Through event handlers, nrpe, and shell scripts, it would be possible to use xi as a logging service, but you would have to write some php to build the display side of things as well.
