Can Nagios provide bandwidth statistics for routers?

Post by TheWeez »

We've implemented Nagios XI in order to test and so far, it seems like a great product. When configuring routers for monitoring, I don't see any method to track bandwidth history? I hope I'm just missing it. We have several offices around the country and frequently get calls saying their network access is slow. Our current monitoring solution, OpManager allows you to see real time bandwidth statistics, as well as historical bandwidth data. Does Nagios have a similar capability? Thank you in advance for any information you might be able to provide.

You should take the time to setup our VMWare image, you'l be doing this in under 5min after you get the VM up.

Ohh, it's under performance graphs after working through the switch wizard. AFAIK the switch wizard uses SNMP oids that are generic enough for routers as well.

As for real-time data, Nagios uses a 5min pooling interval by default and can scale down to 1 min. Though you need 2 data points to see anything and it takes about 5 to amount to any significant data. So with the defaults you'll need about 30min of data.

Use tools like iperf.

I once used a tool that used pings of differing sizes to determine the bandwidth across a remote link, like something 5 hops away. Though this would only be goog to test the current speed a DSL link is training at... not the load on the link.

It would be possible to take any number of these and turn them into components or dashlets.

The screen shot below are my performance graphs for a router that I set up using the switch config wizard. Why isn't it showing anything?

Has it been at least 10 minutes since you ran the wizard? No graphs will show up until there is some data to populate them. If it's been a while and there's still nothing that could be a different problem then.
