Nagios Fusion initial questions

Post by b2m »

Hi,

I installed fusion on a test VM and added credentials of an XI instance to it. Now I got some initial questions to decide whether we should purchase and use Fusion for our distributed monitoring:

1) Why is the login so slow. It takes about 40 seconds. Is that normal and what could be the problem. This is a fresh install via your VMware template. After the login every page opens fast so it shouldn't be a matter of system requirements. I think we got 1 CPU and 1 GB RAM for the VM.

2) Hostgroup Summary Dashlet: When I click on the name of the Hostgroup Fusion opens a link to the first host of the Hostgroup. Wouldn't it make more sence if it would lead to a host detail page of all hosts of the group?

3) Is there a possiblity to show all services of a host on a dashboard?

4) Is there a possible to share views with other users? (I would be interested how to do this in XI as well)

5) Is it possible to create a view of a search for a service like "Power Supply State" over more then one XI instance? For example, when I want to create a view of all power supplies from network components that are all monitored from different XI instances.

6) I read that it's not possible to use a Proxy like in XI. So I have the problem that the check for Fusion updates failes in our environment. How can I disable it?

7) How can I enable HTTPS to access Fusion web interface?

8) When I places dashlets, for example graphs, on the dashboard. How can I ensure that they all have the same size? (I would be interested how to do this in XI as well)

That's all for now. Maybe I'll add some more when I find something ;).

Thank you.

It is not normal. Try to log in then run the following command, and post the output in code wraps:

Code: Select all

tail -100 /var/log/httpd/error_log
2) Hostgroup Summary Dashlet: When I click on the name of the Hostgroup Fusion opens a link to the first host of the Hostgroup. Wouldn't it make more sence if it would lead to a host detail page of all hosts of the group?
This is not normal either. You are supposed to see all of the members of the hostgroup, not only the first one. How many entries you can see on the page? Can you select "1000 Per Page" from the drop-down menu on the bottom of the page and click on the "Go" button? Did this change your view?
3) Is there a possiblity to show all services of a host on a dashboard?
Not "out-of-the-box" at the moment. You can add the "Service Status" dashlet to a dashboard for all of the services of this host in order to view all of them in one place. Alternatively, you can add them (in XI) in a "dummy" servicegroup, and then, in Fusion, use the "Service Group Summary". This way you can view the status of the services, and "drill down" to view services in different states (OK, Warning, Critical, and Unknown).
4) Is there a possible to share views with other users? (I would be interested how to do this in XI as well)
You can create new (or manage the existing) users in Fusion, by going to Admin->Manage Users.
5) Is it possible to create a view of a search for a service like "Power Supply State" over more then one XI instance? For example, when I want to create a view of all power supplies from network components that are all monitored from different XI instances.
Not at the moment but it sounds like a good feature request. If you want me to, I can post it for you.
6) I read that it's not possible to use a Proxy like in XI. So I have the problem that the check for Fusion updates failes in our environment. How can I disable it?
To be honest with you, I am not sure about this one. I will need to talk to our Fusion developer.
7) How can I enable HTTPS to access Fusion web interface?
We don't have this process documented/tested but I would guess it would be similar to the way you set up ssl in XI.

8) When I places dashlets, for example graphs, on the dashboard. How can I ensure that they all have the same size? (I would be interested how to do this in XI as well)
graphs would have different layout, length, and width. Setting them up (all the same size) would distort the image and it doesn't make sense. You can easily resize them and align them in the GUI.

Thanks a lot. I'll check all the things as soon as possible.

I can already confirm that there is nothing in error_log for 1).

Can you add more resources to the server (CPU, RAM) and see if this is going to fix your issue?

Currently this is not possible but it shouldn't be the reason:

Code: Select all

top - 08:13:56 up 4 days, 19:58, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.04, 0.06
Tasks: 105 total, 1 running, 104 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 99.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 1019672k total, 902428k used, 117244k free, 57412k buffers
Swap: 262136k total, 27768k used, 234368k free, 59996k cached
As I mentioned, everything else is fast after login. Btw, the same applies for auto-login.

Sometimes this occurs but not during login:

Code: Select all

[root@localhost audit]# cat /var/log/httpd/error_log

4) Yes, but how can I share views?

8) When I add two graphs for bandwidth or whatever to a dashboard to compare them. I want them to be same size and at the same and y-position at the dasboard. Otherwise it looks unprofessional.

The rest later on ;).

1) Our Fusion developer will be looking into this one.
4) Sharing views in Fusion is not available. You are welcome to post a feature request (or I can do it for you if you want me to)
8) You can resize dahslets only by dragging with the mouse.

1) Thanks a lot. Please tell me when you got news.
2) Thanks, this is solved now.
3) Okay, I think this can be done with views.
4) I think this would be a useful feature. It would be nice if you could post a feature request (for XI as well)
5) Yes, I would find that useful, too.
6) Thanks, please tell me when you talked to him.
7) I'll try that as soon as possible and give you feedback.
8) Maybe another feature request?

Furthermore I once had the problem that the read-only "nagiosfusion"-Account on my XI-Server had full admin access. It seems to be the same problem as other users report. Can you tell something about that. I don't know how to reproduce this, yet.

1) On the slow log in - our developer told me (quote): "...nothing that we added should cause (this type of) issues". It has to be something related to your network, especially considering the fact that this is not a common behavior (something that has been reported as a problem from other users).

4) & 6) I submitted a feature request for "sharing views among users" (TASK ID 2855) and one for "Proxy Component in Fusion" (TASK ID 2856).

We are currently looking into this issue.
