Hello everyone,

I come to you because this is the first time I set up a nagios. After several searches this morning, I opted for installation on an ubuntu lts 16.04. By following the tutorial: https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/ubuntu-nagios/ (shame on me, it does not come from this forum).

Does nagios base install a mysql database? I did not get the impression that following this tutorial this morning that any database had to be configured.

I would like to have the opinion of experienced person to know which additional tools it is interesting to install in order to supervise a flop (50) of cisco / hp switch (via a search by ip addressing for example ask nagios to look for and add all switches with an ip included in range 192.168.10.0/24)

I have a little difficulty understanding the operating principle of this software. I read a lot of configuration example but these mainly talk about a host to be monitored both by specifying a specific host name with an ip and the ability to add hosts to a host group. .

I also read that cacti was interesting for displaying performance chart etc ... When is it appropriate to install it? Right after installing the nagios core or after some configuration?

No it does not but there are DB addons that can be configured like ndoutils.

There are many ways to setup nagios, no 2 installations are alike. One place to look for plugins is the Nagios Exchange https://exchange.nagios.org/ and these can be used to monitor many things.

As an really easy to use alternative I'd like to suggest Nagios XI the commercial version of Nagios as a fully functional easy to use GUI based alternative that have all the addons already builtin, database, graphing popular plugins and easy configuration wizards.

It's not free, but will save you weeks-months on the learning curve, and does have a 60 day free trial you may want to try to get you going. It installs on CentOS or RHEL or we have a pre-configured VM
