Nagios BPI -Doesnt honour xi user Permissions

Post by arnab.roy »

Hi Mike,

I am directly addressing this to you as you wrote the component, it works great but unfortunately has a big disadvantage it doesnt seem to care for the xi user permissions and shows everything to the end user who has only ro access to only few hosts. We like the component a lot can you please add the following features to it
1. Ability to add it as a dashlet on the dashboard.
2. Fix this bug

I have one question to all of your development team why is this in the core product ???

Cheers

The BPI is a community, not enterprise project that will work for both Core and xi users. Currently the user-level viewing of services doesn't exist as a feature of BPI yet. Also, BPI is an optional addon for Nagios xi, it does not ship with our product.

Hi Mike,

Please accept my apologies, there was very big and important typo in my previous post I meant why is this feature not(missed the all important bit) a part of the core product. DO you think it would be develop it further to honour the xi user rules ?

Many Thanks

Ah, apology accepted, sorry for the misunderstanding. We have tossed around the idea of having an enterprise edition of it specifically for xi that's a little more feature rich. The main reason it hasn't happened yet is purely a matter of time. Apart from a few other development projects, the main one I'm working on getting ready is a revision of the Core Config Manager, which is a major project. However, it's good that you expressed interest in having this be a core feature in xi, because we generally prioritize our projects based on sales interest and user feedback. I'll put that on my development TODO.

Just to highlight the importance of this feature we have just launched our managed service offering and have presented the solution to 7, 8 customers and all of them wanted this feature as this is good for a high level overview for non-technical people like managers etc. If you believe that some financial interest can push this up the ladder than that would be great. Please drop me an email at arnab.roy@khipu-networks.com with a pricing for the work involved.

Hi,

Till the time their is any future updates on this can you tell me if I can make this component the home page rather than the dashbaord, I know this would be a change in the standard code and would probably get blown every time we upgrade, but for the time being I think we can live with also, we would like to hide the option from non-admin users. If you could suggest where i need to edit that would be great.

Many Thanks

I'll see about adding a "Default Page" option in xi that will allow this to be done for any page. As far as admin visibility in xi, I'll have to do some investigating on that. I'm going to mention this in our staff meeting today and see what possibilities exist with this, because it might almost be easier to have an enterprise edition of BPI.

Can you send an email to both myself (mguthrie@nagios.com) and sales@nagios.com with details as to what you'd want an enterprise version of BPI to be able to do. If you're willing to pay for a custom component (which we can do), we can probably get it to you soon. If it's more of a feature request, it'll probably be on more of a 6-8 month timeline because of the project load on the development team.
