VMware Clone of Nagios xi Primary to a Secondary

Post by tdawson »

We have a licensed and activated copy of Nagios xi running as a VM in our VMWare vSphere environment. We understand that our Nagios xi key is good for a secondary and test instance also. I have cloned our working Nagios xi VM to another VM which I intend to make our secondary instance. Nagios xi appears to work fine on the secondary VM which of course has a different name and IP. I am sure that as it is a clone from a VM which has a different name and IP that there are things which I am going to have to change to ensure that there are no issues related to the previous name or IP. So far I have activated the license key against the new IP so I assume that we are good as far as activation goes for both VM's. I have also changed the program URL in system settings as it was set to the IP of the original VM. My question is are there any more changes that I will need to change or would I be best resetting the cloned VM back to the xi defaults and restoring a backup taken from the primary instance (does the backup_xi.sh script work when restoring to a target server with a different name and IP ?)

That should just about cover it all. If you changed your xi host from "localhost" to an actual live ip, you will have to change that in the ccm once the import is finished. One thing to note is that your current monitored hosts may have checks that are configured client side and reference a specific ip (nrpe for example). These checks will fail on the test box until the clients' configs are updated.

You should be fine. Usually, you can migrate to a new server, following this steps:

1. Backup your old server
2. Install Nagios xi on the new server (preferable on the same OS/architecture)
3. Move the backup you made to the new server
3. Restore from the backup
