Have you enabled hot-add for both CPU and Memory in the settings->options->Memory/CPU Hotplug settings of the VM? You may also have to power down the VM and then enable that setting to have it work properly. Once that is done this VMware communities post may help.

I don't believe this has anything to do with Nagios xi image but I could be wrong. Are you able to "hot-add" memory to a different VMs? Have you posted this question on the vmware support forum?

yes, other 2008 R2 VM works fine, and centos 6.3 VM I created before can hot-add memory as well, don't why this one can't, just don't want to reboot the server.

This is a strange issue, I am able to turn this functionality on locally, so it seems more likely to be a VM issue. You may have to bring it down to enable this, what kernel version is this VM on? Assuming Cent OS 6.3.

yeah, because our vmware environment is esx/esxi combined. This morning I migrate nagios xi vm from ESX host to ESxi 4.1 host, I still can't hot-add memory, don't know why. BTW, we use centos 6.3 32-bit nagios xi 2012 R1.1 image organically, before vm turn on, I modified memory to 1GB and enable CPU hot-add and memory hot-add function, after than, I had reboot vm several times, memory hot-add function just doesn't work
