It seems like we will be upgrading core to 3.3 in xi within our next release.
Meanwhile, if you feel that you need to upgrade, you can do so by following the steps outlined in our documentation:

Any updates on this ? I was kind of expecting this to happen sooner as xi is a premier release from Nagios

Sorry but we misspoke, Nagios Core 3.3.x is a development release and therefore will not be included in any release of xi. (Odd minor version numbers are development releases, while evens are stable.) When Nagios Core hits version 3.4, then you can expect an upgrade.
