Architecting recommendations for Nagios xi implementation

Post by whjsmith »

Grettings,

We are currently in the process of architecting a Nagios implementation for our server environment. The plan is to have multiple Nagios xi VM appliances to perform the monitoring using Nagios Fusion for centralized reporting. We would like to know what people's general recommendation would be for the following:

The number of Nagios xi virtual machines
Number of cores per VM
Amount of RAM

Please take into account that we have consulted our VM specialists here and they seem to favor smaller VMs. For Example, they would rather us implement 10, 1 core vms with 4 gigs of RAM than 5, 2 core vms with 8 gigs of RAM just to give a rough example.

Here are details about our environment and monitoring requirements:

Little over 1500 servers
Drive space monitoring for all servers – typical is 3-4 drives per server
CPU utilization monitoring for all servers – typical is 1 core per server
File read write times – 20 to 30 transactions/monitors in total
ADS and DNS queries

If I need to supply additional details let me know.

Thanks!
Our installation is currently:
CentOS Linux release 6.0 (Final)
32 bit

Special Configurations: No

You might be able to get away for 2 or 3 Nagios xi VMs if you want to keep them smaller.

As load impact and monitoring requirements can vary, its best to bring one Nagios xi VM online and start adding things to it. You can watch performance information to determine when you'll need to add a second.

FYI, the VMs we have only have a full 60-day trial period, so you have some time to test things out. Also, we offer volume discounts when you purchase multiple licenses at the same time.
As of May 25th, 2018, all communications with Nagios Enterprises and its employees are covered under our new Privacy Policy.

The latest Nagiosxi VMs are configured to use 768mb of ram and 1 core.
